Project Masam Clears Over 2,000 Mines and Explosives in Yemen
The Saudi Project for Landmine Clearance in Yemen, known as Masam, successfully neutralized 2,037 landmines, unexploded ordnance, and improvised explosive devices across various regions of the country during the final week of October 2026.
According to the project’s operational data, the items cleared included 109 anti-tank mines, 33 anti-personnel mines, 1,890 pieces of unexploded ordnance, and five improvised explosive devices. These clearance operations were conducted across the governorates of Abyan, Aden, Al-Dhale, Hadramaut, Hajjah, Lahij, Marib, and Shabwa, with the districts of Mukalla and Marib recording the highest concentration of recovered materials.
Specifically, in the Mukalla district of Hadramaut, teams removed 11 anti-personnel mines, four anti-tank mines, 1,076 pieces of unexploded ordnance, and one improvised explosive device. Meanwhile, operations in the Marib district resulted in the removal of 12 anti-tank mines, 421 pieces of unexploded ordnance, and three improvised explosive devices.
Project officials reported that the total number of mines cleared since the beginning of October has reached 6,511, bringing the cumulative total since the project's inception to 600,000 items. The organization emphasized that the indiscriminate planting of landmines by Houthi forces continues to pose a severe and ongoing threat to the lives of Yemeni civilians, particularly women, children, and the elderly.
